I've been [with less then stellar success] trying to recover info on the NEPEAN cutter and a William Brown, her commander. I'm specifically interested in the first decade of the 1800s. So far I've located 3 vessels with that name - a mail packet, a revenue cruiser and a hired tender, but no evidence of a William Brown, who commanded one of these vessels. If anyone can lead me to a source, or recommend a researcher in the UK who would help, I would greatly appreciate it. I have a sword which was presented by the Postmaster-General to a Commander Wm. Brown of the NEPEAN cutter. So far, the trail stopped cold there. |

Dmitry I have searched a few possible sources of information but unfortunately nothing of relevance jumps out. Is the information that you have about the sword engraved on it - or does it come from somewhere else? The fact that the sword was donated by the Postmaster-General seems to infer that Brown was something to do with the mail packet service. Or maybe he performed some act of bravery in protecting a mail packet. It's a bit of a mystery at the moment but if you can answer my question above it may help. MB P.S. Do you have photo of the sword that you can upload? |
