One for the Cabinet of Curiosities, methinks, along with Nelson's glass eye. Cross-cultural interpretations of this sort can be quite entertaining, though. A friend of mine spent Christmas in Japan a couple of years ago and was bemused to see, among the tinsel decorations, an effigy of Father Christmas nailed to a cross.

Isn't (or wasn't) Nelson much admired in Japan? There's a section on the similarities in the career of the Japanese Admiral Togo and Nelson on www.remembernelson.com. Before the battle of Tsushima in 1905, Admiral Togo adapted Nelson's signal to read:'The fate of the Empire depends on this event. Let every man do his utmost'.
