When Edward Rotheram (later Collingwood's flag captain at Trafalgar) received a commission as lieutenant, he paid a fee of one guinea for taking up his commission. (I'm not sure if this was his first commission as lieutenant in 1783.) Does anyone have details of what fees were payable, or can point to a source for this information? |
