I have seen notices in church porches warning potential thieves that stolen items are trackable.

It's called Smart Water.

I was in a church last Sunday and one of the church wardens was telling me that they had spent a whole day coating virtually every moveable object in the church with it - even down to the internal door knobs.

The problem is that if the flags were ever stolen it would quite likely be to order and then they would end up in some secret, private collection (which undoubtedly exist). In this situation marking with Smart Water wouldn't actually achieve anything.

Nevertheless I quite like the idea of criminals being sprayed with the stuff to prove they were at the crime scene.

Personally I am prepared to leave it to the security professionals to decide if the risk of them remaining in the church is simply too great.

This comes from someone who had 2 short lengths of copper pipe stolen from the back of my house - worth about 50p. The disruption/danger was out of all proportion i.e thousands of gallons of water flooding the back garden and potentially a gas explosion. The current breed of criminals who are creeping around under cover of darkness truly do not care a jot!!

I do agree that security is of supreme concern, and with items of this value, nothing short of a state of the art monitored alarm system would suffice. Whether this is practical remains to be seen. The Hilton family are looking for expert advice on this.

There's a piece in The Times today about the flags. Unfortunately, there is a paywall now so I can't give a link. Does copyright forbid the posting of extracts?

Here is a very short radio interview with Nick Hilton about the flags and the family's wishes for them: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... /?t=50m25s

(The BBC iPlayer link should take you to 50 mins 25 secs into the programme)

I have posted an update on the revised plans for the flags in a new thread here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1316&p=7843#p7843
