Hello, friends.
This is a fantastic forum!
I am in desperate need to acquire the Battle of the Nile Roll, which was discussed on the forum some time ago.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1113&start=0
For the life of me, I can't find anyone who would be selling it. I need it for researching several junior officers that were possibly with Nelson that day.
If anyone has any idea where I might purchase the Roll, I'd be very grateful!
Thanks!

Hi Dmitry,

This looks like bad news, I'm afraid. It used to be sold by 'YesterYears Genealogical Supplies' at www.yesteryearsgen.com but they may have gone of business, and the website has been taken over by someone else.

There are one or two members here, including myself, that have a copy and may be able to look for a specific name for you, but the CD consists of images of the original musters and there is no index. The musters are of course held at the UK National Archives.

Still on the (desperate) look-out for this cd-rom. :| Any and all helping souls will be mentioned with gratitude once I publish the research.

Dmitry

There seems to be a copy for sale on this page:

http://www.britmedals.co.uk/shop.asp?ci ... 2&pid=2707

Or does that "reserved" at the bottom mean it's not available??!!

Like Tony I do have my own copy of the CD. Can you give us an idea what information you require from it.

I just want to thank Mark and Tony again, for their friendly help with the matter! We are strangers united by the love of the past we never saw with our own eyes. :)
Speaking of the eyes - how would you read the following? The HMS Theseus ship's clerk [or whoever prepared the musters?] wasn't the model of penmanship.
I could figure out -
?? Acting Commission 30 July 1797 Willm. Hoste_______________Mid
??? comm. to 30 July 1797 then_______act.Lieut.
??? Feb.1798?

Oh, he's not so bad, Dmitry - at least you can read Hoste's name! :) The indecipherable squiggle at the start of the entry (and on the next line) is actually the recognised symbol for 'per', and is indecipherable because it has no modern equivalent, so we can't blame him for that! The entry in the first column reads (abbreviations expanded):

Per acting commission 30 July 97
Per commission of Admiral Earl St
    Vincent of 8 February 1798

Nice choice. Hoste is one of my 'boys' along with Bennett, Fraser, Hardy, Sutton all being Captains of the Amphion at various points

If you are looking for information on him I have a fair amount plus I would be interested in sharing information (or reading any research you produced concerning him...)

Joss.

Thanks, Tony! I wouldn't have been able to deduct it was Earl St.Vincent for sure.

Joss, do you have any additional info on Hoste aside from what's in the "Remember Nelson" biography and in his memoirs/letters publ. by his wife?

I've seen his actual letters to his prize agent (it was a bit of a shock someone just producing those under my nose -- oh you are making the Amphion, look what I happen to have in a box over here.....) though these are also on micro fiche at the NMM so the originals are not actually necessary. When I get round to it I will be collecting his logs from the Amphion as well though that will involve lots of trips to the national record office plus doing the standard visiting and photographing birthplace etc.

I am doing the Amphion Captains in strict order and am still on Bennett. It is fairly costly collecting this information so I don't want to confuse myself by hopping out of sequence. I would be moving faster but my main priority is currently drawing the ship plans so I tend to only spend a few hours a week on collating the data into a more usable format.

I suppose tangentially the Amphion's plans from the NMM and the various paintings are all further information as well. I could not get the contract though do have the Proserpines.

It all depends on what information you are after. If it is just concerned with Hoste when he was with Nelson then the Amphion connection will be unlikely to interest you whereas it is all I am interested in.

Joss

That's great! Have you made copies of those letters?

BTW, can anyone elaborate on the nature of relationships between captains and their agents? What was the procedure of collecting on a prize? I remember seeing notices in the 1805 London Gazette where a crew was notified that they could collect on a prize that was taken 5 years prior, in 1800.

Hi Dmitry,

I would also like to obtain a copy of the Battle of the Nile 1798 - CD. Did you manage to locate a current supplier?

I am wanting to check muster rolls for a John LEAF/LEEF.

Regards Pete.
