Not too impressed with this show..the food historian claimed that grog was made up of rum, water and sugar  Was sugar used? and that the officers ate the same rations as the men. I may be wrong but i have read that the officers only ate ships rations after their own supply of bought in food ran out. Or has some revisionist historian found some new info?

From 'Observations on Drunkenness', The Gentleman's Magazine, vol 40, 1770:
Quote:
Groggy; This is a West-Indian phrase; Rum and Water without Sugar, being called Grogg

I suppose officers (but maybe the captain excepted?) were only entitled to be issued with the same rations as the men, but that doesn't mean they ate the same rations as the men - certainly they provided their own - and were provided with storerooms to keep it in.
