Post subject:  Britannia's God of War Source?

Working through Andrew Lambert's 'Nelson: Britannia's God of War,' I'm stuck for a source and date for a letter.

On page 178, in a narrative packed with excerpts from dated and sourced letters passing between Earl Spencer and Earl St. Vincent in late 1800, is one without any references at all.

It's from Spencer to St. Vincent and relates to Nelson's impending return to sea.

Quote:
‘… it gave me great satisfaction to find that he had no sooner set his feet in it than he applied in the most pressing manner for service and expressed the strongest wish to serve under your Lordship’s command…’

I would very much like to discover what the date is, where it's from and what else it contains.

Any pointers would be most welcome. Many thanks.

I have seen that quoted somewhere else, but don't remember where! However, Google Books shows it is in the Navy Records Society Spencer Papers, either vol 3 or 4, p273 and is dated 28 Nov 1800:

GEORGE R. SPENCER TO ST. VINCENT 28th November, 1800.
My dear Lord,
Your Lordship has no doubt heard from Lord Nelson since his arrival in this country; it gave me very great satisfaction to find that he had no sooner set his feet in it than he applied in the most pressing manner for service; and expressed the strongest wish to serve under your Lordship's command.

Not sure what comes next!

Thanks very much for this Tony. The date was the big thing, and together with a location for further trawling your info will be very useful.

Cheers!
