What an embarrassment for the museum!

A similar mourning ring was sold at auction some time ago, as we discussed here:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=490&hilit=mourning+ring

One might think that there would be little point in stealing such an item as it would be unsaleable: Nelson mourning rings are extremely rare - and any potential purchaser would put two and two together and not touch it.

Many thieves, I gather from articles in the press about the theft of paintings such as Munch's 'Scream', aim not to sell on the piece but to negotiate a deal to return it - a form of kidnapping, I suppose. The thieves settle for an amount less than the insured value so the insurers are amenable; the museum gets its treasure back and the thieves pocket some cash. Sometimes the police manage a 'sting', sometimes not.

I'm appalled- How could the museum let this happen in broad daylight? :(

A lack of front-line staff is to blame for failing to deter thieves at Norwich Castle and spot missing Admiral Lord Nelson items, it has been claimed.

George Nobbs, vice chair of the museums board at Norfolk County Council, said interpreters that were recently axed at the museum could have prevented it.

A further report from the Eastern Daily Press about the theft. More embarrassment!

The BBC's Crimewatch programme is to appeal for information about artefacts belonging to Admiral Lord Nelson which were stolen from a Norfolk museum.

Items worth £36,800, including medals marking Nelson's death and the Battle of the Nile, were found missing from Norwich Castle Museum on 25 February.
