 Post subject: Attempt to blow up Nelson's Column . . .

. . . in 1884.

Many on here will be aware that the IRA blew up the Nelson Pillar in Dublin in 1966.

And explosives were planted at the base of the Nelson monument in Montreal in 1893.

But did you know that an attempt was made to blow up our Nelson's Column in 1884? :o

The attached heading and 3 paragraphs were "snipped" from a contemporary newspaper report.

Acording to the Metropolitan police archive, the date in question was 30 May 1884. The incident was part of a bombing campaign by the Fenians:
