I recently came across an old advert for the sale of a private library - and one of the books was described as "Life of Nelson (Russia)".

I assumed that that meant it was a Russian translation (although I might be wrong).

It just got me thinking which biographies of Nelson had been translated - and into which languages??!!

Southey would be the prime candidate I suppose, being the longest Nelson biography in print and coming out in numerous editions over the years.

Kester - out of interest - would there be copies of Southey in any of the Scandinavian languages.

Or anyone else from any non-English speaking countries . . . . . . . .

Thanks if anyone can contribute to this little brain teazer.

Mark,

An initial google has not thrown anything up in the way of a Swedish translation for Southey's work. I will keep looking, and in other Scandinavian languages, but don't hold your breath!

If there is nothing, it obviously points to there being not sufficient interest (not so surprising perhaps).

Thanks Kester.

It's kind of what I assumed . . . . . but you never know!

In the meantime I have at least found a French translation from 1820 on Amazon France. But at 300 Euros I am afraid I won't be tempted!!

Meanwhile still grateful for any more contributions.

I knew that Nelson was much admired in Japan and did a Googlesearch to see if any biography had been translated. I didn't find anything, but I did come across this interesting link to the Nelson Society of Japan which relates that in the 19th century an Admiral Douglas and other naval officers of the Royal Navy, were dispatched to Japan at the request of the Japanese to instruct them in all matters naval and particularly in the life and example of Lord Nelson. It would be interesting to know on which biographies they based their lectures.
