Here is a letter for sale in Nelson's hand. It is characteristically generous, offering a recommendation for a Captain Burn who had been 'unfortunate' but who, nevertheless, had retained Nelson's favour. He refers twice in the letter to Captain Burn and once to Captain Burns, an understandable slip when you think Nelson would often spend several hours a day writing letters.

The historical note attached to the letter gives a little background to Capt Burn's connections but says nothing about the intriguing mystery of his misfortune. Since the NMM has assisted in compiling the note, I doubt if anyone has any further information to add. But one never knows......
