As part of a small group I spent Saturday at Merton, it was a nice way to mark Nelson's birthday. We started of at St mary's Church, As i'm sure most of you are aware Nelson's hatchment which once hung above the porch at 'Paradise Merton' still hangs in the Church. The pew on which Nelson the Hamiltons and many other of Nelson's visiting family members sat also survives, and is on permanent display.
I was interested to learn of another naval personality who lived in Merton, at much the same period as Nelson, and is buried at St Mary's. His name is Admiral Isaac Smith, he was a relation of the wife of James Cook and the credited to be the first Britain to set foot in Australia.

There is a plaque at Botany Bay to acknowledge the fact:

During the visit I asked our guide whether Smith and Nelson had ever met, he replied that they had and were friends. I have had a quick look and can't find any accounts of them either meeting or corresponding.
Does anybody have any details of a friendship between the two men?
