Hi everyone, its been some years since I have posted to this board. I am living in Golden B.C. Canada now, so all my details have changed. Mark hope you are doing well.
Well my collection is up for sale, the Nelson letters are now in the hands of Soethby's auction slated for the Dec 12th sale. I still have a house full of things, and slowly I will be selling the collection. It's been hard but you have to start to make room fo other things.
Hope you are all well, I have been missing you.

Susan

Good to hear from you. Susan!

I couldn't find an online catalogue giving details of your letter but the auguries from Bonham's are good: the Nelson letter mentioned in another thread was knocked down for £20,000 (including premium, so the hammer price would have been roughly 20% less).

Browsing idly, I came across this Nelson letter for sale which seemed very reasonable at £4,000+ - until I realised that someone had cut out the signature! This was common in Victorian times, apparently, when, bizarrely, autographs were more highly prized than letters. The signature was then often incorporated into a framed portrait of the signer.

Here's an example of a portrait of Lady Hamilton with a signature vandalised from a letter.

Susan

Good luck with the letters. Let us know when the catalogue is available on line.

Sorry not to have been in touch for so long - as you know my fault entirely!

All the very best with the auction.
