Is there anyone amongst you who would just happen to have a photograph of Roundwood Farm, Ipswich before it was demolished in the 1960's. St John's Primary School now stands on the site. I'm sure there must be photo's in existance somewhere. Unbelievable the local museum has nothing and from the response I received I have a feeling they didn't even know that Nelson owned it! How tragic is that?

Stan,
I don't actually have a photo of Roundwood, if its any use to you, I do know of at least two books which show photos.

The first was published very recently:
Nelson the sword of Albion, by John Sugden (2012), features a picture (illustration 6).

Two images of Roundwood (front and side elevations) appear in a much older book:
Nelson In England, by E. Hallam. Moorhouse(1913), (page 110).

Like you, I find it amazing the local museum has no images or information!

Richard.

If this link works it should take you to the images that Richard refers to in "Nelson in England".

http://archive.org/stream/nelsoninengla ... 6/mode/1up

The book is available on archive.org

http://archive.org/details/nelsoninenglandd00meyniala

Again - assuming this link works - click on Pdf on the left hand side to download a copy of the book to your computer. Then you can print out that specific page.

Hope all - or at least some - of this works.

Richard & MB - very many thanks for your help and yes, the link did work MB. Quite an imposing building and not quite what I was expecting. I know Nelson never lived there but I'm sure that if only because he once owned it nowaday's it would be preserved. Incidently, Barton Hall the house at Barton Turf, Norfolk where his sister Kitty once lived and which Nelson visited is still there and being lived in.
Thanks again,
Stan
