Post subject:  Royal Marines Major Weir and William Darley

There is a letter from Nelson to Major Weir that is going on auction this month:

I assume that it is the same Weir that led the marines at Malta, and that it's the William Darley that was with Cardinal Ruffo at Naples? Does anyone know anything more about them and what their services were, and was there indeed something that Nelson didn't know about to explain why Darley was awarded £200 a year from the government?

It's one of those many little things that's piqued my curiousity :D

(On a side note, the caption beneath the picture saying how Nelson's right arm was amputated... the word "Hurt:" seems something of an understatement!)
