Jonathan Coad’s Historic Architecture of the Royal Navy (published in 1983) is now a classic book. But it is about to be superseded by his new book: Support for the Fleet: Architecture and engineering of the Royal Navy’s bases 1700–1914, 2013, English Heritage, ISBN 978-84802-055-9. It costs £100, but don’t let that deter you. If you’re interested in Nelson’s navy and what went on before and after his era, then you won’t regret the expense. I have to admit that I was involved with the editing of the book, but this is written as an admirer of the work. It is a large-format hardback, 450 pages long, with an incredible number of black-and-white and colour images (most of which have never been previously published). It has a highly authoritative text, dealing with Royal Navy buildings and bases worldwide. It’s going to be a ‘must-have’ reference work for anyone involved in naval history.
