Post subject:  Portrait X-Ray reveals a very different Nelson

Whilst browsing images for an upcoming article, I came across the original Rigaud/Nelson portrait at the NMM.

An x-ray of the portrait reveals a very different Nelson to the one Rigaud (and Nelson) settled on. Here's a snippet of the description:

Quote:
X-rays reveal that, as begun, the portrait showed a rounder-faced Nelson standing bare-headed in lieutenant's uniform with his hat under his left arm. The fined-down features of the finished picture reflect the effects of his intervening years in the tropics, including the fever that nearly killed him during the San Juan River expedition in Nicaragua, in 1780. Fort San Juan, which Nelson helped capture on that occasion is shown as the background here and is believed to have been painted by Dominic Serres.

And here's a link to the website (with an image of the x-ray in question) - http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collection ... 14374.html
