There was uproar on the BBC radio 4 programme 'More or Less' when a mathematician who performs a humorous [eh?] mathematics routine defined a nautical mile as a 'normal mile, only wetter.' Well, I knew that a nautical mile was longer than a terrestrial mile but I didn't know that it varied in length according to the distance from the poles, nor did I know that a sea mile and a nautical mile are not synonymous.

Hello Anna,
Ive never heard the term 'nautical kilometre' have you?
Because the universe is spherical it does not 'work' in space either!
Can anyone shed any light of this, i did hear this before.
Bit beyond me!

David.
