Today is St Valentine's Day and the anniversary of Nelson's great exploit at the battle of Cape St Vincent.

I was surfing idly and came across these teaching notes for use in American schools. How interesting that so much teaching time is devoted to a hero of a foreign power.

There seems to be a greater emphasis on Nelson and maritime history in schools here too: a legacy of Trafalgar 200 as much as Mr Gove's revised history curriculum perhaps?

As a matter of interest, have we any members from Canada, New Zealand or Australia who can tell us whether Nelson appears on their school curriculums - or curricula to be pedantic?

Hello Anna,
I am a member from New Zealand.
An answer regarding your question about Horatio Nelson on school curriculums.
To the best of my knowledge yes is the current situation but becoming less.
Unlike Australia theres a 'fairly strong' body who are pushing towards a republic.
A couple more generations and the 'British Empire' may have little credence in the education system.
Its a pity in my opinion.

David.
