Yesterday, Nelson's teapot from 1799 was sold at Sotheby's for £56,250. The estimate was £8,000 - £12,000.

I presume it has some sort of provenance? I liked the information that the 'N' was for Nelson – I would never have guessed otherwise.

Still, £56,250 – I think I need a cup of tea to recover!

Provenance seems as good as it comes: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/eca ... t.465.html

I had the info ready to post but Tony got there first. Honestly, though, £56,000+ for a teapot! Nelson relics with good provenance usually fetch high prices but this is exceptional, I think. Is it that people don't trust banks, shares etc. and feel unique items like this will 'hold their value'? I hope the new owner hasn't got a frisky cat!
