Does anyone know the nearest Nelson got to actually meeting Sultan Selim III in person?
Probably no where near at all, did he ever go to Constantinople in person?
Diplomatic relations went back over 250 years so good chance i think?
This forum will know without me trying to find out myself.

David.

David:

I don't think Nelson ever met the Sultan. He did award the diamond-studded chelengk to Nelson, which he cherished, but this was delivered to him by one of the Sultan's emissaries.

In 'The Nelson Companion' (ed. Colin White), John Munday records in an essay on the Nelson relics (p. 67), that the chelengk was 'delivered in great state to Nelson at Naples' by the Sultan's envoy, Abdullah Kelim Effendi.

Thanks Anna,
It is possible but like you say highly unlikely, the 'resident' sultan rarely left his mothers side, but he could of actually made the chelengk.
Most were very skilled at one thing or an other.
I wonder what Nelsons language skills were when he received the chelengh in Naples from Abdulah Kelm Effendi?
The french language would of been offensive i guess, were any of the stolen diamonds ever recovered?

Cigarette smoking as we know it came into be during the Crimean War with British troops (who copied the enemy).
Nelsons ships had the options of a pipe, snuff or chewing tobacco almost fifty years prior.
Hense 'navy cut'.

I believe none of the diamonds were recovered after the theft.

I was interested to note on the NMM website that the replica in the NMM was made for the film, 'Bequest to the Nation' and presented to the museum when the film was completed.
