I was reading recently about an entertainer who ran talent shows on the pier at Clacton-on-Sea before WWII.

He said that his main fear at these amateur contests was the epic poem, as these could kill an audience stone dead.

He used to try and put off any youngster who announced they were going to recite "The Death of Nelson" or somesuch by telling them that: "We had a boy here last week who started to recite the Death of Nelson at half-past-three on Wednesday afternoon and at six-thirty on Thursday eveining poor old Nelson was still on his way to heaven - and I don't think he has arrived yet!"
