Well my first thought is that it was a scimitar that was given by the Sultan to Nelson i.e. a sword with a curved blade.

This item looks to be perfectly straight and I can't see how it can have been on the end of a scabbard for a scimitar.

That's my first thought - but as usual if I have my facts wrong I am sure someone will put me straight (totally unintended pun LOL).

Tricky one this. Looking at extant Turkish scimitars in eg the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shows that the bottom six inches of the scabbard show little or no curve - just as the illustration given of the 'Nelson' scimitar shows little of no curve. I'll try to attach an illustration of one from the MM of A but doubt if my computer a skills are up to it. Certainly the style of decoration is remarkably similar.

Thanks Brian. I must remember not to post late in the evening when I have not done my homework!

I am interested in any additional information you can find but I still have to confess to having my cynical head on re. this item.
