See link below for re-enactment of Nelson being made a Freeman of Salisbury:

Many thanks for the link, Ray.

I wonder if Nelson's 'short, animated reply' mentioned his fellow seamen. I have read several speeches by Nelson at celebratory dinners etc. at which Nelson revelled in the praise lavished upon him, of course, but he always seemed to conclude by saying words to the effect that 'any admiral could have done what I did, having under him the gallant officers and the brave seamen I had the honour and the happiness to command.' I like to think he did so in Salisbury!

Hi Ray

It looks as if you had a great event. VERY well done!

Aren't Alex and Finni brilliant. I can't think how anyone could play those roles better.

I would be interested some time to see your list of 22 towns and cities that made Nelson a Freeman. I started making a list myself once. It was growing quite long but I don't think I got as many as 22!

Here's my 21:

Bath, Berwick upon Tweed, Bristol, Exeter, Great Yarmouth, Haverfordwest, Hereford, Ipswich, Liverpool, London, Ludlow, New Sarum (Salisbury), Norwich, Monmouth, Oxford, Plymouth, Sandwich, Thetford, Worcester

Palermo, Sicily.

Drapers’ Company

Could have sworn it was 22!

Hi Ray

First of all an apology that I had forgotten that you had already listed all these Freedoms on a thread we had running back in 2013. I sort of remembered the thread but not how much detail we had gone into.

Anyway on that thread you started with 19 and we were able to add Plymouth and Ipswich which makes the 21 you have here.

BUT I have done a bit more digging and I think you might also be able to add SWANSEA and GLOUCESTER.

Can you look into these 2 and see what you think.

It might now be 23! :)

No 24?

This was reported in the Ipswich Journal on the 6th December 1800.

Swansea's Freedom is listed in Harrison's 'Life' Vol 2. Gloucester lists Nelson as a Freeman. With the Ipswich Journal's listing of the Levant Company of Merchants Freedom we have a confirmed 24! Well done all.
