I just resumed researching the naval career of my ggggfr Joseph Bazalgette as my biography of his father Louis Bazalgette is now published (Prinny's Taylor - the life and times of Louis Bazalgette (1750-1830), and available through Amazon and other distributors for anyone who is interested.

I employed a photographer to go to TNA and copy any captains' letters written to the admiralty by Joseph, and was advised that it was cheaper to copy all of the pages. It wasn't, in my view, since I received a 3.5 Gb zip file containing over 1200 images, and I only found eight of Joseph's letters in this lot. The volumes are as follows:-

ADM 1/1560/212, ADM 1/1560/196 and ADM 1/1560/148, all three of which are bound in one volume as ADM 1/1560, ADM 1/1557/132 and ADM 1/1557/189 bound together in ADM 1/1557 and ADM 1/1559/172 and ADM 1/1559/72 bound together in ADM 1/1559.

So I have many of the letters written in 1814-15 by captains and commanders whose surnames begin with 'B'. If anyone would like me to scan through my images for them I am happy to do so. Alternatively if anyone wants the whole lot please let me know. The file is on a download site and will be available there until 17 December. If you decide you want the file a contribution to the cost would be appreciated, because those 8 letters have cost more than I anticipated.

I forgot to mention that a few of the letters are in code and have been decoded, so anyone interested in codes in use might like to see them.

Hi Chazbaz I have an interest in a family called Bawden . See my post about Lady Hamiltons Seal in earlier discussions. Would you be able to look and see what you can find ? Around this time Lady Hamilton died in Calais and someone got hold of a letter and tore of the seal . The old lady who lived next door to my nan was called Daisy Bawden and she was the one who gave me the seal . Thanks

I can have a look for a captain's signature 'Bawden' if that is what you are after. I don't recall seeing one on my scans through but some of the signatures aren't very legible. Do you know the name of his ship?

I am guessing a bit here but wondering if there is a Bawden listed ?I was trying to work out a tree for Bawden and started from the old lady who lived next door to my nan and gave me Lady Hamiltons Seal . Both Dathan and Bawden appear to have ancestors in the RN .

Capt Arthur Richard Phipps Bawden (Her father ) Born 1854 Married 1885 Camberwell to Lilly Bawden (nee Dathan)

I'm afraid I didn't find a Bawden. These letters are only for 1814-15. You don't know if Capt Arthur Richard Phipps Bawden had a father who was a captain? You can always check naval biographies (O'Byrne is one of the best known). Good luck.

Thanks for checking . You may find this interesting . Bawden Bay Clifford Point and Matilda Inlet were all named after members of the Bawden family . http://apps.gov.bc.ca/pub/bcgnws/names/9711.html

I cobbled together a rough tree from info on the net.Not sure if its all correct but Matilda Charles and Clifford all fit in with the naming of those places in British Columbia.

His brother was Capt Charles Clifford Peel Bawden RN born 5/6/1848 Mevagissey

Charles Bawden was appointed to the Sloop Driver in 1848 .This Sloop was wrecked in 1861 Driver, 1840

That's a good start.
I suggest that you go to HathiTrust at https://www.hathitrust.org/home
Have you used it before?
When you get to the search screen check the 'Full View Only' box.
I searched for "Richard Bawden" and "Richard Bawden" naval, and found Cornwall parish registers and the naval lists.
When you see a list of books, go into the book and use the 'search in book' box.
Sorry if you have used this before but it is very useful.
The British Newspaper Archive is another good source and it's not expensive.
Good luck!

Thanks for that link . I am going to have some fun with that. I have never seen that before . When I went to Greenwich recently I looked at an old Navy list but its actually much easier online .
