A fragment of a flag flown at Trafalgar is to be auctioned, along with Nelson letters, on 17 January. Nelson memorabilia continue to exercise a fascination on collectors, with prices that reflect their interest.

Have just had a look at the Sotheby's website for further details. The sale is called ' Of Royal & Noble Descent ' and their online catalogue is certainly worth a browse. In addition to the flag fragment, Lot 116 @ £80-£100K and the Nelson letters previously mentioned, there are 90 or so other lots of Nelson & Maritime interest including a Nelson memorial ring @ £8-12K and his grog chest, Lot 137 @ £35-£45K.

Happy Bidding!

Phil

Sotheby's have published the results of today's sale on their website.

The fragment of the 'The Victory Jack' Lot 116 sold for £297,000 (hammer price + buyers premium). The grog chest Lot 137 also exceeded the guide price and sold for £68,750.

Obviously the buyers identities are not normally revealed but no doubt we will hear if the NMM has managed to purchase any of the sale items.

Many thanks for the update, Phil - a truly stupendous price for the flag remnant.

Has anyone heard any more about the buyer of the flag remnant ? This usually a confidential matter, of course, but if it had been bought by a public body such as the NMM I am sure an announcement would have been made. I do hope it hasn't gone to a private buyer abroad.

There is another scrap of this flag in the Nelson Museum in Monmouth, if I recall correctly. It is a rather run-down place now, starved of funds, but they have numerous treasures there, including Nelson's prayer book, the blood-stained epaulette of Nelson's coat that was placed under a wounded midshipman's head, and many letters by Nelson and Fanny. An insurance nightmare!
