I have the two volume:

The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson, KB
By The Rev.James Stanier Clatke,F.R.S.
& John M’Arthur, Esq. LL.D.

Printed by Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street

For: T. Cadell and W. Miller, Albemarle Street
1809

I would appreciate an opportunity to hear from anyone who can offer a
knowledgeable opinion, as to the significance of this work on the Nelson
Legacy.

As a boy in a naval prep school, I took great interest in Lord Nelson and
the traditions of the Royal Navy. There is no doubt this influenced my drive to
become a U.S. Naval Officer and Naval Aviator.

I am planning to donate these books (in a protective display case) to the
existing “Nelson Corner” in my old school (Admiral Farragut Academy).
Additionally, I have several contemporary books on Nelson for the cadets
to check out from the school library.

My thought is that history is "our life story”, and offers us an opportunity
to see what other individuals have done with their lives. Our youth can
identify with role models and realistically modify their own course in life,
with their knowledge of those they admire.

Thank you,
George Rodgers

Thank you for your post, and welcome to the forum!

Stanier Clark and McArthur's Life of Nelson was published with the blessing of Nelson's family and was a source book for many subsequent biographers. It has been criticised for the inclusion of unauthenticated material; nevertheless, it contains much of value and remains an important and seminal work in Nelsonian biography.

I note that your copy is dated 1809 and is therefore almost certainly a first edition and, in monetary terms, very valuable indeed. Copies of this date sell for about £1400. It would be a gesture of great generosity to present this book to your chosen library as it would be a treasure indeed.

With regard to the value of this book, I checked on the AbeBooks website and they have several copies of this 1809 edition with the most expensive being offered at £4,500. A generous gift indeed.
