I have just seen this on Ebay, purportedly one of Victory's old fire buckets. These are usually displayed at the break of the poop, but I imagine they are in other places on board. Looks as though it might be genuine?

I've just had a look at the website of HMS Victory www.hms-victory.com and there are pictures of fire buckets there. They have the royal monogram and crown but no date and no ship's name. I think somebody has had their stencilling kit out.

Tycho,

Actually, I would say they could be genuine, since the buckets would appear to have been replaced periodically and the design seems to have differed. I looked out a couple of photographs I have of the quarterdeck, but since they are not a close up of the firebuckets but a general view, I had to look at them quite closely.

The first is an old postcard, there is no date but probably from between the wars, which does indeed show the inscription much as on the bucket on Ebay, i.e. with the name Victory, the ER monogram and the date 1803. Interestingly though, although the date is at the bottom, Victory and the monogram appear to have been changed round. The other photo is from the Second World War period, which shows just plain buckets with no name at all.

The buckets shown on the Victory's website would appear to be modern replacements as they do look rather new, but with a different inscription again. So here we have at least three designs of bucket. Incidentally I also have a couple of views taken of Victory's quarterdeck when she was afloat in Portsmouth Harbour, the latest is circa 1911, which show no firebuckets at all.

Oh, what a suspicious (and ill-informed) mind I have! Thanks for the input.

It will be interesting to see if anyone bites.

Tycho,

Thanks for the update. I presume all other offers, er, 'pailed' into insignificance.
