The discussion on the 'appointments' thread highlighted the jealousies and rivalries that arose within the fleet from time to time. These conflicts must have been inevitable when men were competing for career advancement, personal glory and opportunities for gaining prize money.

Sir John Orde's sense of grievance against St Vincent became almost deranged. Nelson's fury at Sir Sidney Smith's assuming command of one of his squadrons is well known as are Sir Robert Calder's snide remarks after Nelson distinguished himself at Cape St Vincent. There were personal rivalries too: Captain Foley admired Betsy Wynne before Fremantle scooped the prize.

Are there any more examples - the more dramatic the better - a duel or two would not come amiss - of jealousies and rivalries within the fleet?
