Although Nelson never visited the New Theatre Royal in Bath since it was built in 1805, a one act musical tribute was performed there not long after his death. This was ‘Nelson’s Glory’ that had also been performed in London at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. An additional verse of ‘Rule Britannia’ was penned for the performance by Mr Ashley of Bath:

Here it is (brace yourselves):

Again the loud trump of fame
Proclaims Britannia rules the main;
While sorrow whispers Nelson’s name,
And mourns the gallant victor slain.
Rule, brave Britons, rule the main,
Avenge the god-like hero slain.

These details are from a useful little booklet ‘Nelson and Bath’ by Louis Hodgkin, published by the Nelson Society. It contains biographical details of a great number of associates and contemporaries of Nelson who spent time in Bath.
