I have referred many times to my copy of the Naval General Service Medal roll. But I had not noticed previously that amongst the thousands of names there are about 20 in brackets - saying that they were awarded the Military medal as opposed to the Naval medal.

I only realised this when I looked in the Military medal roll, and in there they give over a whole page to these men.

There are only 5 actions involved - Martinique, Maida, Java, Guadeloupe, and St Sebastian.

I am intrigued to know what part these men played in these battles, and why!!

Additionally fascinating is the fact that 2 of the men received the Military medal plus Naval medal bars for other actions.

Imagine the interest if one of those ever came up for sale!!
