This little ditty was first published in Toulon in 1910 and was reprinted shortly afterwards in The Mariner’s Mirror of February 1911. No English version was printed. I am grateful to The Nelson Yearbook 2005 of the Nelson Society of Australia for the text given here. I’ve changed one or two typos I spotted in the text – there are sure to be others I’ve missed, so apologies for imperfections. Anybody fancy having a go at a translation? Post ‘Inside Nelson’s World’ if you’re shy. La Chanson du Redoutable A Trafalgar, comme tu sais, Les Aspagnols [sic] et les Français Se battaient contre les Anglais. Le Redoutable est le vaisseau Que Lucas menait à l’assaut : Sur l’eau jamais n’a fait plus chaud. Tonnaient les boulets de canon Bord à bord contre le trois-pont Que montait l’amiral Nelson. Dedans la hune d’artimon Le Provençal dit au breton : ‘As-tu chargé mon [ton?] mousqueton ?’ L’autre travaillait sur le pont ‘Oui, j’ai chargé mon mousqueton !’ ‘Passe-le moi: je vois Nelson !’ ‘Ajuste, tire, et puis d’un bond Il s’affale en grand sur le pont : Aî tua, aî Nelson!’ Tenant toujours le mousqueton, A l’abordage, il suit Yvon Et meurt à côté du Breton. C’étaient deux fameux, deux lions, Ni toi ni moi ne sait leurs noms. N’importe ! A leur gloire, trinquons! On ne connaît pas l'auteur de cette chanson. |
