I have mentioned Hugh Tours' book 'The life and Letters of Emma Hamilton' on another thread. The appendix listing the expenses incurred during the tour of Wales and the West Country makes interesting reading. In addition to horses, hotels and meals and servants, there are also payments to turnpikes, ostlers, bellringers at various locations, greasing the carriages (three shillings), and £3. 3s 0d for the Playhouse, where they clearly enjoyed the ventriloquist because he gets a tip of a guinea. Fourteen shillings for feeding the horses. I suppose that's the equivalent of a tank of petrol.
