This is a query I hope someone might be able to provide a pointer for.

I'm chasing a naval chaplain, name of Watkins, a Devonshire man, who may have been active any time between 1780 and 1792. Possibly even earlier.

I have no other information on his naval career to date, so apologise for the vagueness.

If anyone can offer a steer about where I could start to look, I'd be very, very grateful indeed.

If you can track down a copy, then try and find "The Sea Chaplains; a History of the Chaplains of the Royal Navy" by G. Taylor (published in 1978). It lists the names and dates of appointments of sea going clergymen.

Fantastic PhiloNauticus

The British Library have a copy. I'll be visiting the BL in March, so have added 'Sea Chaplains' to the reading list.

Thank you very much.
