Yesterday I taped the film Miss Austin regrets on video. It was broadcasted by one of the Dutch television stations. It is a film about the live of Jane Austin and her relationship with her niece Fanny. I enjoyed watching the film. I noticed they pronounce the numbers like we do in Holland. 28 is eight and twenty, etc. Does any of you know when and why it turned into twenty eight, etc. as it is pronounced today. Sylvia |

Sylvia: the reversal of double digit numbers, five and twenty, three and thirty etc. was the standard eighteenth century method of counting and continued well into the nineteenth century when it died out, except for one or two remnants such as giving the time. My grandmother, born in Victoria's reign, always said, 'Five and twenty past three' and such a usage is still common amongst older people here in the west country and other parts of rural England. |
