A print of a copy of this original, hitherto unknown portrait of Nelson, now lost, is for sale on ebay. It is an intriguingly new perception of Nelson, and the background information makes interesting reading. Please note, however, that the image for sale is only a reproduction, not an original. In fact, it's a reproduction of a watercolour copy of the lost original!

There is much misuse of the word 'print' in selling art. This is a 'giclée print' - which is, in effect, a sort of inkjet printing. Many people on the forum are extremely well-informed about art. However, I'll made a post, in due course, on the information forum with a few guidelines on buying prints, just in case anyone is new to this interest.

Hi Robbie:

have you ever come across Richard Walker's book 'Nelson's Portraits'? It's a really in-depth study of a huge number of images of him. It was very expensive when it was published, about £60, I think, and still costs about £24 second hand, though I got mine at Portsmouth Dockyard shop for.....£4.99!! You could order it from the library (or drop hints for Christmas) if you don't fancy shelling out such a lot.

It's interesting, I think, that so many of Nelson's portraits have similarities, and yet are all a bit different. I suspect he had a very expressive face that changed with his mood, so each artist would see something different. In the one above, he looks rather thoughtful whereas in the one by Hodgett, he looks like the determined man of action. (Scroll down to see the image)

Hi Anna, thanks so much for the link, he loks rather thoughtful as you say, but I really like it. Some of his pics show him to be really expressive about what he must have been feeling at the time, which is extrodinary. Reference the book, I have now looked into the Dockyard site shops to no availe, but I will try Waterstones next time I pass, I would really love to have this book!!! :D
