I have looked at a couple of pay books, but unfortunately did not take photos or obtain copies. They were very large and unwieldy, with lots of columns. Most of the columns are identical to a muster, not surprisingly, as they are copied from the muster. Some of the extra columns are as follows:
Wages remitted from abroad
Wages remitted at the Pay of the Ship
Full Wages
Neat Wages - net pay after deductions
Blank headed column - marked to indicate if paid
When paid
To Whom Paid - This could contain multiple entries if some pay was remitted and the balance paid in cash. The name, relationship and means of payment were entered for each.
There were planty more columns, but these are probably the most important.
I should confess that this is not from memory, or even my notes, but from NAM Rodger's
'Naval Records for Genealogists', a slim book which includes much of interest to those other than genealogists, including 20 odd pages on muster books and pay books, with descriptions of columns, explanation of their use, and information on the procedures in use at the time.
