There is an article in today's Sunday Times entitled University of iPod.

Originally the whole iTunes/iPod concept was about the downloading of music - which could then be stored & listened to on a portable player.

But it has developed into new areas and there is now a section which has University lectures which can be downloaded to your PC and/or portable player.

There are various category headings i.e.

Business
Engineering
Fine Arts
Health & Medicine
History
Humanities
Language
Literature
Maths
Science
Social Science
Society
Teaching & Education

Under History I noticed a series of 16 lectures on Georgian Britain from Warwick University which I am going to give a try as soon as time allows.

But first I am listening to an hour and a half lecture from Oxford University called "A romp through the history of philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to the present day." It has apparently gained "cult status" with more than a million downloads.

First you need to download the iTunes software to your PC. In the Store you click on the "iTunes U" button and after that it is pretty self-explanatory.

Oh and of course it is all TOTALLY FREE.

The overall name for this new internet phenomenon is Open Educational Resources (OER).

If you don't want to try the iTunes route - Massachusetts Institute of Technology has nearly 2000 lectures on line.

Their History section obviously leans very heavily towards the USA - but there is some interesting looking European stuff on there too.

I like the first one - "How to stage a revolution" - I am warming to this subject!! :D :D :D

Crikey!

I just tried to look at one of the MIT lectures and I am not sure exactly what you get! :?

I can't see any audio or video so it may be that you just get Text.

I will try to investigate later and report back.
