I got this Google alert about an 18th century Admiral Brown - Irish-born, press-ganged into the Royal Navy, emigrant to Philadelphia and ultimately, founder of the Argentinian navy.

His experiences in the Royal Navy, including a daring escape from captivity in France, sound interesting. Until we read the book, can anyone supply further details of his RN career?

Having studied the Brazilian Argentine War of 1826-8 from Brazilian, Argentine and British documents in some detail, I can only observe that the summary of it given in the article about Marcos Aguinis's book is superficial nonsense.
I have never been been able to establish any connection between William Brown and the Royal Navy (although his brother was certainly a Master RN during the war) and there is no mention of such a link in the extensive and admiring comments on his personality and exploits made by British residents of Buenos Aires and Brazil, and by British RN and consular officers who were there at the time.
Neither did Brown leave any memoir recording it.
If anyone using this site does have real information - rather than legend clouded with hero-worship - I would cerainly like to know of it.

Thanks for the heads up, Brian.

I note the the link to the Irish Independent includes the word 'entertainment.'

We are not amused.
