Nelson and his brothers-in-arms often used the phrase 'the defence of our laws and liberties' as the driving force behind their commitment to their duties; and certainly, Englishmen of the day felt themselves to be freer than most people in other countries.

The recent television series 'Garrow's Law' has been a fascinating and informative insight into the workings of 18th century justice, and the contribution of Sir William Garrow to the rights we enjoy today of presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the right to universal legal representation, and access to justice in a criminal court.

A new biography of Sir William Garrow has just been published. I've ordered a copy from amazon and will write a book report in due course.
