Post subject:  Executions

There was a well-documented occasion in May 1800 when a Marine, John Jolley (or Jolly) was sentenced to death. Nelson ordered that everything should be set up for the execution, then, at the last minute, the prisoner was told that the death sentence would not be carried out. One commentator suggests that Nelson was being sadistic. But I believe there were other occasions when prisoners received last minute reprieves.

Was it a very uncommon occurrence? And who made the decision about a reprieve?
