Just recently, we seem to be having trouble from the dread spammers, despite the screening system in place. I remove them, and links to dubious sites, as soon as possible, but apologies if anyone is inconvenienced or offended by anything that is posted. Links to Nelson and naval-related sites are welcome and encouraged. However, please note that this is a discussion forum, not an internet shop, so if you register here in order to market your own goods and/or services you will be de-registered immediately. UPDATE: we appear to have had a flurry of spam registrations today, (17 June 2010) together with posts that are totally unconnected with Nelson and his World. I will remove them as soon as possible and apologise once again for any inconvenience caused. I'm posting this as a sticky which I hope prospective and returning spammers will note. |

Anna Thanks for the info - I spotted one "odd" post earlier which you have now removed. Just a point. Most spam is automated. It is the only way the spammers can get the volume of posts that suits their percentage game. i.e. that two in a thousand people might be duped into responding. So they are constantly trying to circumnavigate the security on whole servers/databases etc. etc. You may have seen that a number of websites/forums are now adopting the CAPTCHA protocol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA Another pain for genuine users - but if the problem persists may be the only way to go. Just a thought. MB |

Thanks for your comments, Mark. We actually now do have a system in place - a question that has to be answered by anyone registering, so the problem we are having is with real 'human' registrations not automated spam. I've sent you a PM to clarify a little more but don't want to reveal our tactics publicly! In the meantime, we'll just zap the 'iffy' registrations as they occur. |

We get quite a few of these on the ACG site where i am a moderator, they try all sorts of tricks from direct links in their posts to links in their signatures. They always end up getting banned. |

Thanks, P-C. It's a drag, isn't it? I've just removed a post a yard long about mobile phone sales and deleted the registration. Well, they can keep trying and I'll keep zapping! |
