At a Midlands meeting of the Nelson Society a while back one of the members said that he was a young naval cadet in 1949 and was taken out as an observer when Implacable was sunk.

He told the same story as Tony above i.e. that they actually tried too hard. Too much explosive and too much ballast - and ended up botching the job.

I bet that took a few years to live down!!
