Having enjoyed Roger Knight's 'Pursuit of Victory' when it first appeared in hardback, I breezed into a bookshop today, and speedily bought the paperback as a present.

When I got home, I discovered that someone at Penguin had bizarrely decided to exclude from the paperback edition ALL THE SOURCE NOTES. The other appendices that appeared in the hardback - the chronology of Nelson's life etc. are there but NOT these crucial references.

WHY have they done this? WHY have they included all the other addenda but not these essential references?

The hardback was plagued by typos and now the paperback is weirdly truncated in a way that defies common sense.

If you are thinking of buying this paperback edition - don't.

I posted a warning about this "Knight-mare with Penguins" but I shouldn't have buried it under the Book Reports thread.

I realized the endnotes and bibliography had been stripped out... about a minute too late - after I'd started writing in the margins of my beautiful new paperback.

The footnotes (or at least some of them) remain, but they contain references to entries in the absent bibliography!

It's bizarre. I can't understand why Penguin would publish a mutilated version of an important scholarly work.

I have just had what my family call one of my RED MISTS on Amazon.

I have deliberately given it one star and the title BEWARE to warn potential purchasers. It is such an insult to Professor Knight and his monumental work to debase his scholarship in this unforgivable way.
