Please post details of any forthcoming (or upcoming as the modern trend has it) events with a Nelsonian connection that you think might interest forum members.

Below are details of a reading to be given by Colin White in June. It will be held in the grounds of Gilbert White's beautiful 18th century house at Selbourne in Hampshire. Gilbert White was the famous parson/naturalist who wrote 'The Natural History of Selbourne.' Read more about the location at www.gilbertwhitehouse.org.uk/events.php

24th June
7.30pm Summer Lecture in the Marquee
Join us in Gilbert White’s beautiful parkland for a summer evening with Dr Colin White of The Royal Naval Museum, with a lecture entitled Nelson in his own words- Readings from the new Nelson letters.
Nelson wrote marvellous letters that bring him vividly to life – especially when read aloud. Using passages from a large collection of hitherto unpublished letters, which he discovered in archives all over the world, leading Nelson scholar and Royal Naval Museum Director Dr Colin White explores aspects of the Admiral’s fascinating and many-faceted character. He also tells the story of the remarkable 5 year research project which unearthed the new material.
£15 to include wine and soft drinks and canapés.
Free parking in our field.
Please telephone 01420 511275 to book.

The Nile Luncheon, organised by the Nelson Society, will be held at the Rutland Arms Hotel in Bakewell on Saturday 2 August 2008, starting at 10.00am. The list will be closed when the figure of 70 has been reached so early booking is recommended.

The guest speaker will be Mr Justin Reay FSA who will speak on the subject of 'Nelson and the Admiralty'. Mr Reay was a Royal Navy officer and is now senior manager of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and tutor in Naval History at the University of Oxford. His history of the Admiralty and his monograph on the Royal Navy in the Peninsular War will both be published in 2008.

For guests who travel up the day before, there will be a get-together and supper with entertainment at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Bakewell, starting at 7.00 pm on Friday 1 August.

Please book via Mr Alan York OBE, 8 Rushley Gardens, Dore, Sheffield S17 5EP. The luncheon costs £23 and the Friday evening supper is £8.

This is rather short notice, I'm afraid, but if anyone is near Greenwich on 24 July 2008 there is a free lecture, at 2.30 pm at the Caird Library, NMM. It is on Nelson's Women, one of a series of 'archive journeys'. It will be illustrated with original manuscripts, rare books and objects and is a splendid opportunity to become familiar with some of interesting items from the museum's collections.
