Post subject:  Petition for "Strandingsmuseum St.George"

Feed back on the petition for the "Strandingsmuseum St.George" in Thorsminde, Denmark. I have received the following information from Gert Normann.

It is a rather complicated matter resulting from a new law which changed the infrastructure in our country (much larger and fewer muncipalities) and reduced the number of state supported museums to one in each muncipality. This meant that all other existing museums in each muncipality had to be placed under the management of one single museum. Such an arrangement will obviously lead to - at least initial - great problems and depends very much on the individuals involved.

The "Strandingsmuseum St.George" was placed under "Holstebro Muesum". The management in Holstebro and the "Friends of Strandingsmuseum St.George" have very different visions on how to run the museum and after some time cooperation was no longer possible.

Eventually the 'Kulturarvstyrelsen' - the national management of museums - decided to establish a new and independent board to manage the cooperation between all (three) museums in Holstebro muncipality - in order to give each museum greater autonomy while still being 'under the same hat' and thus eliminate the present conflicts.

As a result of this arrangement the "Strandingsmuseum St.George" has regained much of its autonomy and the board of the "Strandingsmuseets venner" considers this solution acceptable and is looking forward to continue to improve and extend the museum.

The petition was a great help in this proces and we are very gratefull to all of you, who supported us with your signatures. In all we got almost 2000 signatures and also some letters of support. There is absolutely no doubt that this made an impression on those who should find the way out of the problems.

So Thank you very much.

Many thanks for that update on the progress you have made to maintain some control over the running of the Strandingsmuseum St George.

Thanks to Kester, who drew our attention on the website to the concerns about the museum, we were able to make the matter known to a wider audience. I am glad we were of help, and send our good wishes for the continued flourishing of the museum. Held og lykke!

Thanks for the good wishes. At least now we know where we stand, and it could have been worse ;-)
