George Magrath's is a fascinating story. A very good friend of mine, 'Barbie Thompson' who is based in Plymouth, has spent a number of years researching Magrath. Barbie is quite well known in the SW area as an excellent speaker on a variety of naval related subjects. I'm sure members of this forum would appreciate her Magrath presentation. I know of two occasions this year that Barbie is due to give the magrath presentation: Buckland Abbey in May, and also the Nelson Society AGM at Bristol in October. I can heartily recommend it to anyone who has the chance to attend either! |

I'm belatedly catching up with a few posts on this forum! In June 2013, the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 made a visit to Plymouth in Devon, in which Barbie Thompson paid a key part. On the 4th June, they spent the day at Princetown, Dartmoor, in a commemoration ceremony to mark the 200th anniversary of the arrival of American prisoners of war at Dartmoor. Roy and I were very pleased to be invited, and after weeks of dreadful weather (snow at Princetown only a few days earlier!), the sun shone all day, and it was a brilliant ceremony. Magrath (or MaGrath) was of course the highly respected surgeon at Dartmoor POW prison, and had served on board the Victory until a few months before Trafalgar, much admired by Nelson. Many thanks for the info, Lesley. Here's a link to an earlier discussion on American prisoners at Dartmoor: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=363&p=2066&hilit=Dartmoor#p2066 |
