As Anna ('tycho') has kindly mentioned our new book in a different post (on the main discussion area), I thought I would mention some of the talks we are giving this autumn. Roy's and my new book is Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England (Little, Brown), published in the US as Jane Austen's England (Viking). It's effectively a companion to our previous book Jack Tar, and as Jacqui ('mira') has said, it describes 'the society that bred the men who fought at sea'.

Our first talk this autumn is at the historic Theatre Royal at Bath on Friday 20th September at 12 noon. Tickets £10 (or £22.50 with lunch). Book online at http://www.theatreroyal.org.uk/page/3009/Eavesdropping+on+Jane+Austens+England/679, or phone 01225 448844. This is a great time to visit Bath, as there are many other events going on as part of the week-long Jane Austen Festival. Before our talk, you could also attend another one at the Theatre Royal – Kim Hicks performing scenes from the novels of Jane Austen, while in the evening there is a Regency Costumed Masked Ball from 7pm, or you could have an exclusive candlelight visit to No. 1 Royal Crescent. Stay overnight, and there are other wonderful events on the final day of the festival, Saturday 21st. Tickets can also be booked through the Bath Box Office, tel. 01225 463362 or through http://www.bathboxoffice.org.uk.

One of my favourite pieces in a Jane Austen novel is Persuasion, where Anne walked up Milsom Street and 'had the good fortune to meet with the Admiral. He was standing by himself at a printshop window, with his hands behind him, in earnest contemplation of some print.' And so on! Admiral Croft then goes on to explain to her how the artist obviously didn't have a clue about boats - you can imagine Jane Austen in the company of her naval brothers, listening to such conversations.

We have several other talks lined up for the autumn, all listed on our website http://www.adkinshistory.com/latestnews.aspx, including Henley Literary Festival, Ilkley Literature Festival, Off the Shelf at Sheffield and Bridport Literary Festival. Hope to see some of you!
