An exhibition of Turner's sea paintings at the NMM gets an ecstatic, double-spread, 5 star review by Rachel Campbell-Johnson in today's Times.

The sea in all its manifestations constituted a great part of Turner's oeuvre and this exhibition has gathered his greatest maritime works, including The Fighting Temeraire. Some are on loan from overseas, many from galleries at home.

The range and variety of his responses to a single subect is amazing, according to the reviewer. 'Whether painting his monumental royal commission 'The Battle of Trafalgar' or working out ideas on the pages of his sketchbooks; whether alluding to a lost classical past or determindely incorporating the lost up-to-date details in his paintings.'

The mood that [the exhibition] captures is as bewitchingly changeful, as sublimely powerful, as the sea itself. The spectator wil find himself swept away.'

The Times has a paywall so we can't read its review on line but here is a very enthusiastic piece by Andrew Marr published in the Daily Mail.
