This is a rather good collection of interesting Pinterest photos.

What an interesting collection! I was interested in the image in the link below. It is not a portrait I recognise. In fact, the face seems to belong to the wax image in Westminster Abbey, and the hat seems to have been superimposed by 'photoshopping' or some such art beyond my ken. Any comments?

Anna

I'm probably going off on a totally wrong tangent here. But I wouldn't have said a "Photoshopped" image.

It looks to me to be a tableau of sorts. Could have been at one of the naval museums or even at Madame Tussaud's.

Anna, you are on the right track, but the technology is a bit older than Photoshop! It is a coloured photogravure of the wax effigy at Westminster Abbey. See here: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collection ... 07920.html

Evidently the effigy has been rearranged from time to time, and the left hand, modelled by Catherine Andras along with the head, looks a bit different to me. See here:

Crikey how interesting!

My post was made a bit late last night - so I had a feeling my mind might have been wandering off in the wrong direction. :)

I imagine that this is the Franz Hanfstaengl.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Hanfstaengl

If he made this image himself it makes it pre-1877 which I suppose is possible. Or there could have been an ongoing business after he died.

What is the issue with the hat? Some of the images have it and some don't. I was in WA in the last couple of years and I can't remember whether it had the hat or not??!!

I saw it earlier this year and he wasn't wearing the hat.

Also I don't think the hat in that image from the Nelson Dispatch is the original one as it doesn't have the eye shade.

Hi Vicki

It makes it all a bit more confusing doesn't it!

But what an interesting story Anna has uncovered here.

And excellent work by Tony to drill down and discover what he did.

The NMM page linked above confirms that it is Franz Hanfstaengl.

A search of Google Images shows that at various times the hat has been at the foot of the glass case, on Nelson's head, and more recently suspended near the top of the case. There's another old photo (published 1908) right at the end of this page: http://www.kellscraft.com/UntroddenEngl ... sCh07.html

A 1940s newspaper article, referring to the lock of hair rearranged by Emma, says that in 1935, "when the hat was last lifted, it was found that, although displaced, it was still possible to see that a lock of hair had been pulled forward".

I haven't seen it, but I wonder if the eye shade folds up into the hat so that it can be worn without the eye shade being visible?

The hat is one of the few items clothing the Westminster Abbey/Andras effigy that belonged to Nelson himself, along with the shirt and stockings. The coat was probably made specially to fit the figure.

Rina Prentice's 'The Authentic Nelson' includes the info above (with a picture of the hat) on page 105. The image - photographed from underneath - looks like the shade would easily fold up under the brim when not in use. It's a pretty flimsy thing and in a very poor condition.

Thanks Jacqui. I like Rita Prentice's book so I just pulled out my copy. The Andras effigy was based on the Hoppner portrait which doesn't have a hat - so it makes sense that the effigy doesn't have a hat. But the fact that the hat belonged to Nelson and was donated at the time does make me think that it should be permanently on the effigy.

Meanwhile I was just messing round on Google and I came up with this. It is a postcard (c1910) currently for sale on eBay.

But then the hat would hide Emma's arrangement of the hair!

Again the hand looks somewhat different to more modern photos. Has it been remodelled?
